Our 4 Days from Ouarzazate to the Sahara Desert tour is a private, round-trip adventure deep into the Great South of Morocco, starting and ending in Ouarzazate. Rather than a single overnight in the dunes, this longer loop pushes further east along forgotten desert tracks before looping back through the classic kasbah route.
We follow the Draa Valley and the legendary track of the former Dakar Rally to reach the remote, little-visited dunes of Ouzina, continue to Merzouga for a night with nomadic families, the Gnawa village of Khamlia, and a camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset, before heading back west via Todra Gorge, the Dades Valley, the Valley of Roses and the Skoura Palm Grove to close the loop in Ouarzazate.
This tour runs privately, with your own driver-guide and 4×4 vehicle throughout. If you would rather finish your trip in Marrakech instead of looping back to Ouarzazate, take a look at our 4 Days from Ouarzazate to Marrakech via Sahara Desert, which follows a similar route via Ait Ben Haddou.

Day 1: Ouarzazate → Draa Valley → Alnif → Dakar Track → Overnight in Ouzina
We collect you from your hotel or riad in Ouarzazate early in the morning for the start of this 4 Days from Ouarzazate to the Sahara Desert tour. The road follows the Draa River, one of Morocco’s longest, and the scenery shifts gradually from dry plateau to palm groves and fields running for miles along its banks.
We break the drive with several stops among traditional Berber villages and the mudbrick kasbahs that line the valley — simple but striking buildings of straw, mud and water set against the green of the palm groves.
After lunch in Alnif, we pick up the old Dakar Rally track, driving through wide-open desert scenery toward Ouzina — one of the quietest, least-touristed corners of the Moroccan Sahara. Between Taouz and Ouzina the terrain keeps changing, from bare hamada to pockets of green and the orange dunes that stand out against the dark hills nearby.
On arrival, we settle into a simple, authentic Berber lodge in Ouzina for dinner and the night.
Accommodation: Kasbah auberge in Ouzina
Meals: Dinner and breakfast included
Day 2: Ouzina – Tour of the Dunes – Camel Ride & Night in a Berber Camp, Merzouga
After a Berber breakfast at the lodge, we continue toward Merzouga on a day of changing terrain — villages, dunes, dry riverbeds, hamadas and oases — picking up another stretch of the old Dakar Rally track by 4×4 along the way.
Around Merzouga, we tour the Erg Chebbi dunes and stop at nomadic settlements, sharing a glass of tea and learning a little about their day-to-day life and traditions.
Lunch is in Khamlia, a small village between Merzouga and Taouz known locally as “the village of the blacks,” home to a community descended from sub-Saharan migrants. Here you can try tea and peanuts with the locals, listen to a live set of Gnawa music, and taste the famous Berber pizza. Those who want more can also spend part of the afternoon on a quad or buggy among the nearby dunes.
Late afternoon, we head back to the lodge to mount our camels for the ride out to the Berber camp. The hour-long trek times itself around sunset, giving you some of the best desert photos of the whole trip. Once at camp, enjoy a welcome mint tea followed by a candlelit dinner, then a Berber drumming show around the campfire before settling into your tent beneath the stars.
Accommodation: Berber camp in the Erg Chebbi desert
Meals: Dinner and breakfast included
Day 3: Merzouga – Merzouga Desert – Todra Gorges – Dades
Those who rise early will catch one more desert highlight before breakfast: sunrise over the dunes of Merzouga, among the most memorable moments of this tour.
After the ride back to the lodge, shower and a Berber breakfast, we set out for Rissani, the ancient Sijilmassa and once a key staging post for caravans crossing the Sahara — its souk was among the busiest along the old trade routes, and its donkey parking on market days is still a sight in itself.
From there we cross semi-desert country to the oasis of Tinghir, then follow the Todra River north for around twenty-five kilometers to the Todra Gorges — canyon walls rising over 300 meters, among the most spectacular in the world, with a scenic approach road running past a dense palm grove.
After exploring the gorges and their village, we take the Route of the Thousand Kasbahs to the Dades Gorges, shaped over centuries by the river carving through the rock.
We spend the evening and overnight at a charming kasbah in Dades.
Accommodation: Kasbah riad in Dades
Meals: Dinner and breakfast included
Day 4: Dades – Valley of Roses – Skoura Oasis – Ouarzazate
This final day of our 4 Days from Ouarzazate to the Sahara Desert tour starts with breakfast at the kasbah before heading back toward Ouarzazate through the Valley of Roses.
Less than 50 km from Skoura, Kelaa M’Gouna is a fortified village known for its rose-water distillery. Set at the foot of the High Atlas, this valley’s rose bushes fill the air with scent each May — flowering runs from mid-April to mid-May — and rose cultivation, distillation and perfume-making remain among the area’s most important trades, celebrated each year with its own Rose Festival.
We continue to the Skoura Palm Grove, a vast oasis of more than 700,000 palm trees, its deep green a sharp contrast to the dry plateau around it, scattered with kasbahs and adobe villages where little seems to have changed in generations.
From Skoura, the road leads back to Ouarzazate, where you’ll be dropped off at your accommodation, bringing this 4 Days from Ouarzazate to the Sahara Desert tour to a close.
