Itinerary: 9 Days Marrakech Desert, Imperial Cities & Essaouira

At Morocco On Tour, every journey is private and customizable. Want an extra night in the desert, a cooking class in Fes, or more beach time in Essaouira? Tell us your style and we’ll adjust the route, activities and stays.

Day 1: Marrakech → High Atlas → Ait Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Skoura → Valley of Roses → Dades Valley

(6–7 Hours Drive)

Pickup from your riad at 08:30. The road climbs into the High Atlas, winding over the Tizi n’Tichka pass past terraced fields and clay villages clinging to the hillsides. We stop at a Berber women’s argan cooperative to see traditional pressing methods and taste culinary and cosmetic oils.

By midday, the earthen walls of Ait Benhaddou (UNESCO) rise ahead. Cross the river and climb to the old granary for a wide view over the Ounila valley — your guide can point out where Gladiator and Game of Thrones were filmed. After lunch, continue to Ouarzazate, the “Gateway to the Desert”, with an optional stop at Taourirt Kasbah or the Atlas Film Studios.

The road continues through the Skoura palmgroves — a living landscape of date palms and mud architecture — and the fragrant Valley of Roses, spectacular in bloom from mid-April to mid-May. As the light softens, the Dades Valley opens into ochre cliffs and strange rock formations. Settle into your kasbah-riad for a slow-cooked dinner with valley views.

Overnight: Kasbah Riad in Dades Valley — Half board (dinner & breakfast)

Day 2: Dades → Todra Gorges → Tinghir → Erfoud → Merzouga → Camel Trek & Desert Camp

(4–5 Hours Drive)

Follow the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs” to the palm-filled Tinghir oasis, then walk into the Todra Gorges, where limestone walls rise up to 300 m overhead. Climbers dot the cliffs and the river runs cool at your feet — one of Morocco’s great natural corridors.

After lunch, pass through Erfoud, a center for dates and fossil workshops where ancient marine life is cut and polished into art. By late afternoon, the sand peaks of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon. Leave your main luggage at the vehicle, then ride into the dunes by camel at sunset (or take a 4×4 transfer if preferred).

At your desert camp, mint tea and warm hospitality are waiting. Dine under the stars, listen to Berber drum rhythms around the fire, and try sandboarding on the nearby slopes before retiring to your private ensuite tent.

Overnight: Desert Camp near Merzouga — Half board (dinner & breakfast)

Day 3: Merzouga — Sunrise, Khamlia Village & Off-Road Desert Day

(Local Sahara Day)

An optional sunrise over the dunes starts the day, best caught from camp or a short walk to the nearest ridge. After breakfast, the rhythm changes: the rest of the day is spent exploring on wheels rather than on the road, with a guided 4×4 off-road excursion through pistes and dune fields that standard vehicles never reach.

We visit Khamlia, a small village known across Morocco for its Gnawa music — descendants of sub-Saharan communities who settled near the dunes generations ago, whose drumming and call-and-response singing still draws an afternoon crowd. From there, the route continues off-road toward quieter dune fields and, where conditions allow, tea with a nomad family.

Back at camp by late afternoon, there’s time to rest by the pool (at camps that offer one) or simply enjoy the dunes once more before a second night under canvas and stars.

Overnight: Desert Camp near Merzouga — Half board (dinner & breakfast)

Day 4: Merzouga → Ziz Valley & Gorges → Midelt → Azrou Cedar Forest → Ifrane → Fes

(7–8 Hours Drive)

We head north through the palm-lined Ziz Valley and its sculpted gorges, pausing for photos that capture the desert giving way to green. After lunch in Midelt, the Middle Atlas takes over: ancient cedar stands near Azrou, where wild Barbary macaques are often spotted roadside, and the chalet-style town of Ifrane, known as Morocco’s “Little Switzerland”.

Arrive in Fes by late afternoon, with the evening free to settle in before two full days in the medina.

Overnight: Riad in Fes — Breakfast included

Day 5: Fes — Full-Day Guided Medina Tour

(Night 2 in Fes)

With a licensed local guide, dive into Fes el-Bali, a labyrinth of trade and tradition largely unchanged for centuries. See the Royal Palace gates from outside, walk through the Mellah, and step into the Attarine Medersa and the Nejjarine Museum & Fountain. From a terrace above the Chouara tanneries, watch leather dyed in open pools exactly as it has been for generations.

Meet artisans shaping zellij tilework, brass and carved cedar along the way; if time allows, a short drive up to Borj Nord gives a sweeping view over the whole medina. The evening is yours — a hammam, rooftop tea, or a quiet dinner.

Overnight: Riad in Fes — Breakfast included

Day 6: Fes → Meknes → Volubilis → Rabat

(4.5–6 Hours Drive incl. visits)

We head to imperial Meknes, the 17th-century showcase built by Sultan Moulay Ismail. See the monumental Bab Mansour gate and the lively El Hedim Square, with time permitting for a look at the vast Heri es-Souani granaries. From there, walk the Roman city of Volubilis (UNESCO) — forum, basilica, triumphal arch and some of North Africa’s finest surviving mosaic floors, set against open farmland.

By afternoon we reach Rabat, Morocco’s elegant capital (UNESCO). Depending on timing, visit the Hassan Tower & Mohammed V Mausoleum, the whitewashed Udayas Kasbah overlooking the river mouth, or the quiet ruins of Chellah. Evening at leisure.

Overnight: Riad/Hotel in Rabat — Breakfast included

Day 7: Rabat → Casablanca (Hassan II Mosque) → Essaouira

(5–6 Hours Drive + visits)

A short run down the coast brings us to Casablanca for an optional interior tour of the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest in the world and dramatically set over the Atlantic. Visits run at fixed times around prayer schedules, and modest dress is required. A walk along the Corniche or through the arcaded Habous quarter rounds out the stop.

From there it’s a longer drive south to Essaouira (UNESCO), where the pace slows noticeably. As the light softens, walk the Skala de la Kasbah ramparts, watch the blue fishing boats come in, and breathe in cedarwood shavings drifting from the thuya wood workshops nearby.

Overnight: Riad in Essaouira — Breakfast included

Day 8: Essaouira — Free Day on the Atlantic Coast

(Night 2 in Essaouira)

With no driving today, Essaouira is yours to explore at your own pace. Browse the artisan boutiques and woodworking shops inside the ramparts, watch gulls wheel over the fishing port, or simply sit with a coffee on one of the sunlit squares.

For those who want more, horseback or camel rides along the beach, a short surf lesson, or a boat trip out to the Purple Islands can all be arranged on request. Dinner is best kept simple here — the day’s catch, grilled and eaten outdoors.

Overnight: Riad in Essaouira — Breakfast included

Day 9: Essaouira → Argan Country → Marrakech

(2.5–3 Hours Drive)

A last unhurried morning in Essaouira before heading inland through the argan forests that surround the region. We stop at a women’s argan cooperative to see traditional oil-pressing by hand, and — with luck — spot goats climbing argan trees for one of Morocco’s more unusual photographs.

Arrive back in Marrakech by mid-afternoon for a relaxed drop-off at your riad, bringing a nine-day journey across desert, mountain, imperial city and coast to a close.
